Error status

Once the page answers normally again, the problem goes away by itself on the next check.

404 or 410: the page is gone

The page was deleted or moved, or its address changed.

• It moved on purpose? Update its address in Checks & pages, and redirect the old address to the new one, because old links and search results still use it.
• It shouldn't be gone? Put the page back from the WordPress trash or a backup.
• All pages give a 404, except the home page? Go to Settings › Permalinks in WordPress and press Save Changes. That writes the rewrite rules again.

401 or 403: the server turns visitors away

A password prompt, a permission or a firewall rule stops the visit. Does the site open for you? Then something may be turning only us away, see When our checker is blocked. Does it stop you too? Check the folder's password protection in your hosting panel and the rules in .htaccess, or ask your host.

500: the site crashed

PHP stopped on an error, usually after a plugin or theme update, or because of a broken .htaccess file. The PHP error log in your hosting panel names the file that failed. WordPress's own errors are in Critical error.

502, 503 or 504: the server is overloaded or down

PHP or the web server has usually stopped or is too busy, or a proxy in front of the site can't reach them. Ask your host to check the server and restart PHP. Does it keep coming back? Ask which process takes the load: often it's bots, a heavy plugin or a cron job.

508: the account hit its limit

Your hosting account reached its limit on CPU, memory or processes. Ask your host which limit, and whether a heavy plugin or a bigger plan helps.
